Type Locality and Naming

Named after the city of Balyklytau, northern foothills of the northern Nuratau ridge. I.A. Kim et al. in 1990 (460, p.170). Stratotype in 1 km west of the Kutarma quarry on the northern slope of the Egarbelitau mountain.

Synonym: Balyklytau Suite, Балыклытауская св.


Lithology and Thickness

The suite is divided into three sub-suites.

Upper - widely developed on the northern slope of Egarbelitau and Balyklytau - thick-bedded to massive, biosparitic, organogenic, organogenic-detrital limestones. Often found organogenic structures of the type of biostromes and biostrome masses.

Middle - only in the western end of Egarbelitau - bedded limestones with cherts.

Lower - only on separate hills of the western end of Egarbelitau - massive oolitic limestones

Total thickness 300-900m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Lies with a stratigraphic break on the carbonates of the Devonian formations. There are different opinions about the lower contact. According to V.S. Korsakov et al. (1993), the Balyklytau Fm conformably lies on the Kutarma Fm; A.K. Bukharin et al. (1990), R.R. Usmanov et al. (1999) believe that the contact with the underlying thicknesses is everywhere tectonic.

Upper contact

Relationships with overlying formations are not observed.

Regional extent

Northern foothills of the N. Nuratau ridge, mountains of Egarbelitau, Balyklytau.

Fossils

Upper – Often found organogenic structures of the type of biostromes and biostrome masses. Contains conodonts - Gnathodus bilineatus (Roundy), Lochriea cruciformis Kir; brachiopods Striatifera striata (Fisch.), Productus planus Jan., of the Serpukhovian stage of the Lower Carboniferous.

Middle – Contains conodonts - Gnathodus bilineatus bilineatus (Roundy), Lochriea mononodosa (R.A. et D.) of the Visean stage.

Lower – Mixed conodont complex - Polygnathus nodocostatus Br. et Mehl., Gnathodus texanus Roundy from the Famennian stage of the Upper Devonian to the Visean stage of the Lower Carboniferous.


Age 

Along R.R. Usmanov, the age of the suite Along foraminifers should be considered in the interval of the Serpukhovian-Bashkirian epochs of the Early-Middle Carboniferous. The age is accepted in the volume of the Visean-Serpukhovian of the Early Carboniferous. Deposits, attributed to this suite, were first distinguished by N.A. Losev et al. (1952); the Early Carboniferous age was established by rugose, brachiopods, crinoids. The name "Balyklytau" suite was first proposed by V.P. Vashchenko, A.I. Kim et al. in 1990, who divided the section into more detailed subdivisions Along conodonts.
